about

A song about being in Rome in October 2010 when a huge protest march was marred by rioting and cars were burned in Piazza San Giovanni in Laterano and in via Cavour. The worst violence turned out to have been fomented by agents provocateurs disguised as anarchists but who were really working with the police. Yet the press largely neglected to report this, so that the police ultimately succeeded in making the demonstrators look like thugs. Thus the title AP is a little bit of a pun (agents provocateurs + Associated Press).

lyrics

AP

Syndicates and stylish kids
Schoolteachers facing down the lids
Everybody's got a point to make today
And everybody loves a well-attended parade
Oh-oh-oh-oh

But from San Giovanni to your living room
Its a long long way and you shouldn't assume
The men in the newsroom are old and cunning
Something about the story's always gonna be funny
Oh-oh-oh-oh
Oh-oh-oh-oh

But now we're famous baby, look at the TV set
But I can't see our faces in that imagery yet
Didn't I see you down by the park?
Was it you – in the via Cavour?

Did you hear what they said? Well it's not strictly true
About the glass that broke and the rocks that went sailing through

Cos the camera phones were our eyes on the street
And caught the boys with the bats hanging with the police
Yeah they got it on film, so let me repeat:
The boys with the bats came in with the police

So from San Giovanni to your living room
Its a long long way and you shouldn't assume
Cos the men in the newsroom are old and cunning
Something bout the story's guaranteed to be funny

But now we're famous baby, look at the TV set
But I don't recognize our faces in that imagery yet
Was it you that smashed that car?
Was it you – in the via Cavour?
